Coming soon: our new city-centre space where residents can build life skills, access support, and connect with our community in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

We've been sitting on some exciting news for a while now, and we're finally ready to share it!

We've been busy creating something a bit different for René House this year: The Hub - a dedicated social and support space, where our residents can access vital workshops, support sessions, skills training, and community connection.

This new project is a collaboration between René House and our sister charity, the KYEM Initiative, and it's something we've wanted to create for a very long time now.

For years, our support workers have delivered thousands of hours of support - sometimes in our resident homes, sometimes in coffee shops or parks - but we've never had a dedicated space designed for learning, skills development, and connection. The Hub changes that.

Because it's a commercial space, we have the flexibility to transform this small space into a multi-functional environment for things like CV building workshops, budgeting and debt management sessions, life skills training, digital literacy support, and sessions run by partner organisations.

The space will have computers, a projector, and room for our team to deliver engaging training sessions. And our team of homelessness support workers will finally have a proper environment for meaningful one-to-one and group support sessions.

The Hub will also allow our residents, who live across different properties in Nottinghamshire, the opportunity to meet each other in a supported environment. This space will give them a chance to connect, make new friends, share experiences, and support each other.

We’d also love to open it up to other organisations working with vulnerable people, people who are experiencing homelessness or suffering from mental health challenges, or people who just need a little support. We want this to be a social space that encourages social connection. (If you'd be interested to hear more about this, please get in touch!)

Right now, The Hub looks a bit bare, but we have a clear vision! We want it to feel welcoming, not institutional - somewhere you'd actually want to spend time. Soft seating, bean bags, a large central shared table, and flexible furniture that can be rearranged depending on the day.

Sometimes it needs to feel like a classroom, sometimes a social space, sometimes a meeting room. There'll be a small kitchenette where people can make a brew and take a break - as we do love a cuppa here at René House! We also want an illustrated wall featuring our impact data, a visual reminder of what we're working towards together.

We’re highly conscious that many of the people who come through René House may not have performed well in traditional educational settings. For some, restrictive environments trigger bad memories of schools where they may have struggled or systems that labelled them ‘failures’. The Hub is being designed with that in mind. It's educational - because learning will happen here - but it doesn't feel like school. It's just a space where growth is possible, on your own terms, at your own pace.

The Hub is based in central Nottingham, making it easily accessible for all our residents with excellent transport links and close to other services they may need. The city centre location makes it easier for partner organisations too.

Interestingly, this space was once the front of an old bookshop - and we think there's something quite fitting about a place that used to house books becoming somewhere our residents can learn and rebuild.

Originally, we had hoped to turn this space into a charity shop - a way to generate income, raise awareness, and create volunteering opportunities for our residents. But the more we thought about it, the more we realised a social hub would be far more beneficial long-term. A charity shop would have been great, but The Hub will be transformational! It will give residents access to resources, training, support, and community. The charity shop can wait, but this can't.

Now comes the work of actually pulling it all together - furniture, equipment, decoration, partnerships with organisations who can deliver workshops. It's a big undertaking, but this space has the potential to change what's possible for every person we house.

At its heart, The Hub is about creating opportunities - to learn skills that open doors, to connect with people who understand, to access support in an environment that feels safe, to rebuild confidence and move toward the life you want. Not everyone will use it the same way, and that's exactly as it should be. Some will be there every week, working toward goals. Others will drop in for a chat and a cuppa now and again. Some will use it as a quiet workspace. Others will come for connection.

We hope to maybe see you there one day!
